Jan 15, 2012 Yeah, Im usually the one finding an exception to every rule, but this isnt one of them Using a lathe as a mill and a mill as a lathe. And, for the record, Id love to have a worn-out mill drill, it would beat the Hell out of the filehacksaw I used for the better part of 40 years and much better than the milling attachment on one of my lathes.

So, if you require speedy production, specifically for the cylindrical parts, you must choose a lathe over a mill. It is better at holding. But if you need unique designs, try using mill machines. 5. Apr 16, 2019 A mill can also cut more creative shapes. Lathe machines are limited. They do not need multiple setups to create the same part. They can only work for cylindrical parts. 4. Tools. For those that have a milling Machine, barrel-maker Dan Lilja explains how to turn 6 PPC necks using a vertical mill. In many respects this is easier than using a lathe. Again, the process Dan describes can be used for cases of other calibers, so long as you have appropriate mandrels and tools. Brass photo courtesy Speedy Gonzalez.
Jan 15, 2012 Yep, agreed. A lathe AND a mill is good to have. You can do milling on a lathe and turning on a mill but thats not what theyre for. A lathe is for making round stuff round, and a mill is for milling
Aug 22, 2011 As you can see, it aint rocket sciencewe use the Adjust Addresses Revision to multiply all the Xs by 2. Side Note for Postprocessor Mavens. I have a sneaking suspicion that if you can really make a post sing, there is a way to create a special post for your mill CAM that can crank out a profile in lathe
Nov 01, 2020 Making lathe jaws was the first part I programmed and setup on a mill. hah Used a threadmill the first time. Once in a while well make some in a pinch, but use a inserted dovetail cutter with the part at an angle on a 4th axis.
Sep 29, 2014 The lathe work required wasnt too involved, but was required between operations. I couldnt justify milling, then sending out for lathe work, then milling to finish. This interests me greatly. It looks like tool holding block is the most critical part. I have a small 3 jaw lathe
Jul 20, 2016 im very interested in using my haas mill as a lathe. ive got a 3 cat 40 chuck for it, and im trying to figure out if there is a relatively simple way to trick fusion CAM into outputting code that will allow me to do simple lathe operations - but itd be great to
May 27, 2020 In the simplest terms, a lathe holds a workpiece on a rapidly-spinning chuck a cutting head or tools then moving along the length of the workpiece, forming it into the correct shape. On a mill, the workpiece is stationary, clamped onto the bed of the mill in the case of a vertical mill. The rotating head then drills into the workpiece.
Nov 21, 2020 A milling machine will be used a lot less than the Lathe so I would put my money in a good lathe and keep them separate. look for a bench top Mill that will do anything you want it to as long as it is not to cheep. Something along these line or better depending on your budget. It will do everything you want to and more.
Nov 19, 2020 A vertical mill isnt needed for barrel work. Nice to have in the shop- but you wont use it for barrels other than fluting or perhaps some breech extractor cuts on older rifles. Not clear what you meant by throating prefits - but if you did indeed mean just that, you dont need a lathe at all. Throating can be done by hand with a Uni-Throater.
Feb 17, 2009 You CAN use a mill as a lathe in a pinch for small parts, but to use it as both is not a good idea. Mill bearings will wear much faster. I used my old Bridgeport to turn a few very small parts under 34 . I held the round brass stock in a collet and the lathe tool bit in the vise. You need a dedicated lathe AND milling machine.--Grant
Jul 21, 2011 Precision Lathe Operations on a CNC Mill But when it needs to produce precision turned parts, even if for a very small lot size, the shop needs a solution. The Turning Head attaches a CNC milling machine to help bridge the gap between full-featured CNC lathes and mini lathes.

Apr 15, 2015 I have an 80 lower and I have a Shop Smith lathe, which can be flipped vertical and used as a drill press. Ive read here now using a drill press to mill the lower can be done, but an actual mill is preferred. My question is regarding using the lathe as a mill.

Mar 17, 2019 This way I get a much more capable lathe along with a benchtop mill into the same footprint that would be needed for a benchtop lathe and mill setup side by side on a work bench. Plus the fact that I will be able to use the lathe and mill in conjunction with each other giving me a larger bag of tricks to reach into when necessary.

Oct 31, 2020 Easy pezzy, mill the jaws to fit. put them in the lathe chuck with a od ring and machine the grooves on the id, then use a ring on the id and machine the groves on the od. Made lots of jaws for the Bullard this way, if you want points put the jaws back in the mill and use a 60d cutter...Phil
With some code for coolant from the Haas mill post, I have tested this successfully. The key is put a comment G54 or G55 or whatever WCS in the tool comment in Fusion. My modified post will look for those terms G54,G55,G56, etc, etc and change the WCS
There are 8 effective ways to machine tool chatter, lathe chatter, or milling machine chatter Correct tool pressure and rigidity Slightly tighten chuck pressure on the part not too tight Choose the right size of jaws for your part jaws should hug the entire surface of your jaws Use a
Milling can be carried out on a lathe, and it can do a good job, once a few small modifications have been made. A resonably solid lathe can mill steel quite capably. Accuracy within a thou of an inch is no problem. Before the advent of relatively cheap Asian milling machines it was quite common for this type of work to be carried out on a lathe.
If your lathe has T slots in the cross slide you can simply use those to mount the mill slide. To fit my lathe I had to precisely drill and tap three 10mm holes into the top of the cross slide, to bolt the vertical slide down - see below. The two smaller holes on the left mount the tool post, the other three are for the mill
Introduction I needed a lathe to make small accurate identical parts so the obvious answer was to use a CNC lathe. I have several manual lathes that could have been converted to CNC, and I previously built a custom CNC lathe there is a link below, but this time there were more complex tooling steps required so I decided to use my small custom CNC mill as a lathe.
While lathe machines are more limited in use than a milling machine, they are superior for cylindrical parts. While a mill can make the same cuts that a lathe does, it
