Dust Separator Lid for 5 Gallon Bucket. Designed for use with shop vacs, this lid fits atop a 5 gallon bucket and gives chips and dust a chance to drop out of the airstream before they enter the filter bags. In other words, youve just made a two-stage system.
Jan 26, 2017 My original dust collector was just an old shop vacuum. The filter clogged regularly so I made a cyclone separator out of sheet metal and some old buckets. This worked well enough except I didnt engineer the lid for the cyclone well enough and it tended to pop off, that and its nearly 4 overall height made it lee than ideal.

How to Build a DIY Dust Collector Get the Basics. At its core, a dust collector is a basic wooden box with an exhaust fan or blower attached. You then connect a length of hose from the tool to the fan. This collects the particulates and dust, and it deposits them into the sealed box.

Nov 15, 2009 The general consensus is that in a 5 gallon bucket, most of the dust gets sucked back into the DC which defeats the purpose unless you Thien-ify. In any case, itll probably be easier and more efficient if you use something larger than a 5 gallon bucket, in which case this lid is what you need, its 21 diameter instead of 12.

3. Keeping in mind that the larger the surface area of your bucket the more worms it can host I am working on an average of 10000 worms per 10.7 square feet 1 square meter. So I would estimate each of your 5 gallon buckets should be able to support 800 to 1000 worms. 4.
Feb 17, 2014 The plans shown below are for basic 5-gallon bucket dust separator. Someday I may have to make a bigger baffle but for now this works like a charm. Measured the bucket to get the diameter of the circles that I needed to cut for the Top lid, mid lid and the baffle.
It was quite a lot of work to make that cylinder. For a later cyclone build I just used 5 gallon bucket for the cylindrical part. Much easier. The bottom of the separator is a piece of plywood with an arc shaped slot cut out of it, just like in a Thien-baffle. I added a ledge of plywood to help keep the dust bucket aligned on the bottom.
The separator and hose are good quality, quick to set-up and fit on a standard 5 gallon bucket. I hated emptying my shop vac and then paying about 18 bucks for a new filter. Using the Dustopper, my shop vac and filter are clean as new and the sawdust and chips all fall into the bucket which is easier to dump.
So, the first step is to size and cut the topmost circle. You can really use any bucket or trash can you want for this project. I used a 5-gallon bucket I got for free from Napa when I bought some oil. Step 1 here is to simply put the bucket on the plywood, and trace it.
The port holes protrude out to provide an easy hookup for your dust collection hose. The handle on the cyclone lid makes cleaning out the can a snap. Simply turn off your dust collector, lift the lid straight up amp off the can for easy cleaning. Fits 5 gallon bucket. Also available in 30 gallon metal trash can size SOLD SEPARATELY
As Phil Thien says in his design, the baffle is a critical piece of the separator. This allows dust whipping around the inside of the separator to drop into the bucket and not get picked back up. I started by making a slightly smaller circle than the last one. This needs to be able to drop about 4-6 inches down into the bucket.
